The Value of Lifelong Learning

Humans, as a species, have an innate need to grow and improve. It’s what drives innovation and improvements on all levels. This desire for growth ranges from an improvement in our social lives to economic growth. Learning, is a vital portion of that. The best way to illustrate this, ironically enough, is to study those who have achieved the level of success many of us yearn for.

When examining the greats throughout history you tend to notice a pattern. Legends like Benjamin Franklin and Bill Gates both attribute their success to their love of learning. Franklin, a man of many talents is best known for successfully creating the light bulb. A feat he achieved only after failing to do so thousands of times. Franklin famously said “I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,0000 ways that don’t work.” Along that arduous process he learned 10,000 ways that don’t work and ultimately one that did, which is why we are now able to walk into a room and magically have light in the dead of night, at the flick of a switch.

Still not convinced? Fair enough. If one of our founding fathers wasn’t enough how about the richest man on the planet, Bill Gates. The Microsoft tycoon who now spends his days combating disease and global poverty attributes his immense success and fortune to reading a book a week. When asked in an interview Gates stated "These days, I get to visit interesting places, meet with scientists, and watch a lot of lectures online," Gates explained. "But reading is still the main way that I both learn new things and test my understanding."

These men are two specific examples as to the importance of lifelong learning and only scratch the surface of what is possible with the power of knowledge. When you dig deep into every successful person’s psyche you will find an insatiable desire to learn and improve. They’re focus is on becoming all that they can be and that is why they are successful. So go ahead, follow the path laid down by those who came before you and whom are where you want to be and get to learning.
